Malgré l’adoption en 2001 de tous les textes liés à sa création, le Cameroun, le Congo, le Gabon, la Guinée-Équatoriale, la République Centrafricaine et le Tchad n’auront jamais réussi à faire décoller la compagnie aérienne fictive Air Cémac.

Prévue pour relier les capitales des six pays de la zone Cémac, puis une vingtaine de capitales africaines ainsi que six métropoles européennes, dont Paris et Bruxelles, le transporteur sous-régional ne verra donc jamais le jour. Les États de la Communauté économique et monétaire de l’Afrique centrale (Cémac) ont parachevé le 3 août dernier son processus de liquidation. Confrontée aux difficultés de démarrage, elle a été, tout simplement, mise en liquidation. Les six États membres de la Cémac ont d’ailleurs abrogé tous les textes communautaires relatifs à ce projet.

Ce processus est lancé en application de la décision des conférences des chefs d’Etat du 6 mai 2015 à Libreville au Gabon, et du 31 octobre 2017 à N'Djamena, au Tchad.

Selon le site d’information « Réussir business », les ministres des Transports agissant en qualité d’actionnaires ont également décidé que les fonds constituant le boni de liquidation, arrêtés à la somme de 7,569 milliards de francs au 25 juillet 2018, soient affectés à la Banque des États de l’Afrique centrale au guichet 1 du Fonds de développement communautaire.
